Given that it came immediately off the back of episode 20, which had been a relative struggle to put together, episode 21 was much easier for us.

Perhaps we’d worked out all of our demons in the prior recording, because this one did flow a little more naturally.

I think the ‘cold open’ focusing on summer holiday memories was more evocative than the DIY ‘cold open’ of the previous episode too. We both tapped into some nostalgia, including a shared memory of Coney Beach in Porthcawl, which was clearly a childhood haunt for both of us.

Like with the previous episode though, I hadn’t managed to get a list ready in advance, so the bit when I give Ben a choice as to whether we look at a ‘Back to School’ list from Clarks (the shoe people) or Ryman (the stationers) was a genuine choice. I literally had just typed ‘Back to school’ into my phone.

We went with Clarks, and it really did reward us, and perhaps the dynamic of me being as surprised by the contents as Ben was was something different—albeit it is a risky strategy to employ every episode.

The postcard seemed to leave both of us a little nonplussed—it could be a seafront image, but equally it might not be. It’s perhaps evidence that we might need to jettison that bit when we move over to video. But I will fight for the postcard bit to stay. I’m weirdly fond of it. I’ll probably give him ‘the register bit’. Even I think that might have run its course.

In fact, this recording session did give us a lot of food for thought. As much as we clearly can ‘wing it’, audio is relatively forgiving when it comes to editing out the bad bits. I’m not sure video will be quite so accommodating, and so a bit of extra prep pre-recording might be advantageous.

I have every faith in us though. As we discuss on this episode, having 21 episodes recorded makes us officially three-time ‘podfade’ survivors…
