1,000 Downloads, No Idea: The Story So Far…

The output on this blog has, possibly ironically, been inversely linked to the productivity on the podcast.

Since launch day on the 20th of April, Ben and I have maintained a steady output of episodes. This has been no mean feat. The early episodes were recorded during the Easter break when we both had a little more time on our hands, but it hasn’t been quite so easy to find the time to record since the end of that particular holiday.

We did have a little bit of a reprieve from the demands of the day job a week or so ago when it was half-term, but in reality, fitting in a weekly podcast recording schedule alongside full-time jobs in a secondary school has been quite challenging.

Still, it does seem to be going quite well at present, and the image above suggests that some people seem to quite like what we’re doing.

Crossing 1,000 downloads after just 6 weeks is not bad for a new podcast as far as I can tell, and it certainly exceeds my expectations. It doesn’t exceed Ben’s, alas; he’s already rehearsing for when we get our slot on This Morning and can’t quite understand why ITV aren’t already on the phone trying to book us.

As difficult as it is to schedule time in to record, the response thus far has been gratifying. Our audience, far from being entirely made up of secondary teachers, appears to range from 13-year-olds to people well into their seventies. Some of them are teachers, obviously, and some are colleagues, who in the main have been pretty nice about the whole thing—though I suspect some were listening purely to see if we said anything that would get us fired.

I think, thus far, we’ve stayed on the right side of the line with regards to controversy, and indeed we seem as obsessed with UK supermarkets and high-calorie snacks as we do with secondary education.

Anyway, we seem to have a few episodes ‘in the can’ so to speak, so I thought I might take the opportunity in light of that buffer to start updating this blog.

If for no other reason than the postcards, which Ben openly scorns but which I sort of love, deserve a more visual home than an entirely audio podcast.

So, I’m going to do a bit of an episode-by-episode feature over the next few posts. In the meantime, though, click on any of the links in the sidebar and you’ll be able to enjoy (or re-enjoy) all of the episodes so far.
